LVP flooring with acoustic underlayment in Minneapolis condo basement by Third Coast Flooring

The short list

  • Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP): Waterproof, tough, stylish. Add the right acoustic underlayment to reduce footstep noise.
  • Laminate: Durable and budget-friendly. Pair it with a sound layer to bump your IIC.
  • Carpet + pad: Soft, warm, and the quietest choice for bedrooms and halls.

A quick word on IIC & STC (plain English)

  • IIC (Impact Insulation Class): How well a floor setup softens impact noise like footsteps. Higher number = quieter below.
  • STC (Sound Transmission Class): How well a floor–ceiling setup blocks airborne sound like voices/TV. Higher number = less noise through.

Many HOAs list target IIC/STC numbers for upstairs units. We hit those targets by pairing the right floor with the right sound layer.

Keep neighbors happy (fast tips)

  • Float LVP/laminate over an acoustic underlayment.
  • Use area rugs or runners in living rooms, halls, and near beds.
  • Add felt pads to chair and table legs.
  • Choose carpet with a quality pad for bedrooms and play areas.
  • Use proper transitions and perimeter trim so the sound layer stays continuous.

Carpet padding options

  • Rebond pad: Great feel and value.
  • Memory-foam style pads: Extra cush; great in primary bedrooms.
  • Rubber/felt pads: Dense, durable, and quiet for busy spaces.

Underlayment options for LVP & laminate

  • Foam underlayments: Affordable, quick, solid everyday performance.
  • Rubber or cork underlayments: Heavier, better at cutting impact noise.
  • Attached-pad floors: Many LVP/laminate lines include a basic pad; we match them with the right add-on when your HOA needs higher IIC/STC.
